Play in Off-TV play and with no-touchscreen configuration. You can set those settings in the options of the game (on the gamepad). You will need touchscreen to interact with the cutout mode and if you pause the game as these are gamepad only modes (use your mouse). Enable Gamepad audio in CEMU settings or else you will only have background music.
The game is somewhat playable, although there are some visual glitches, such as Paper Mario and the toads appear to be silhouettes, Princess Peach appears to be yellow and surrounded by a black border, and Huey appears to be invisible in paper form. The hammer Paper Mario uses and the shy guys are also silhouettes.

In case you want to add another feature (or also for anyone who is interested on directly editing the save game file), it is possible to have 5 cards for the battle (I think the maximum allowed by the game design is 4 cards), however 6 cards will freeze your game.
