You don’t train Pokémon in gyms. Gyms are there to get gold each day to buy stuff in the market. To train Pokémon you need to go in the said Pokémon page and select power up (which uses both dusts and candies). This way your Pokémon’s CP will rises meaning it’s more effective in battle. Another way to make the CP rise is by evolving them.
Do this before selecting which Pokemon to go forth and represent. To ‘power up’ go on your Pokedex and select you Pokemon. Then hit the power up button.
To do this you select the training button on the bottom right, when viewing the gym information. You can choose only a single Pokemon to battle. Each one of the Pokemon you defeat is worth 100XP for the gym, unless your Pokemon is lower CP, in which case you’ll earn 500XP for the gym.

If a gym is already taken by your team (in my instance, Team Red or Valor), you can train there or send some of your Pokemon to the gym to help guard it from the blue and yellow teams. So, if you defeat six Pokémon of 2000 CP each on a Gym, place your Pokémon on it, feed it a Berry, hold the Gym for 24 hours, and win a Raid Battle there at some point during that period, you’d get: 60 + 100 + 10 + 1440 + 1000 = 2610 badge points.
