He can use pokestops, and catch pokemon still. I asked elsewhere and they said he was botting or whatever and it was a ban.

Besides early server issues, the problem could be due to weak cellular signal. With weak signal, your phone cannot reliably communicate with the server. I have seen this occur with gyms, pokestops, and pokemon.

The error 29 is a type of generic error which forces you to leave a gymnasium after you initially leave a fight and try to re-join. Error 29- Pokemon Go. This error message is very unpredictable and may happen to any player while battling any gym. It has been officially recognized by the developers as well.

There is a fix to this. Its not a PoGo problem so much as it is a GPS problem. Turn off game, then turn off GPS, turn game on, when PoGo says it has no GPS signal, tab out and turn it on to force recalculate your location. Attack gym 😀 The error is telling you that you are out of range of the gym, even though it doesnt look like you are.
