Because minecraft is setup to have a max attainable level of 30 (our server has that restriction disabled) the anvil automatically thinks it is not possible to carry out what you’re wanting.

So I did a bit of googling and came across this forum. It states that anvils are “capped” at level 40, i.e., anything that costs more than 40 levels to enchant, rename, or repair, is “too expensive”. However, it also states that a workaround is to rename it first. This (by what I understand) should “reset” the cost, to some degree.

Why does it say “too expensive”. Update: it seems the only way to get impaling V is to use an enchanting table. You can “edit” an item only three times. So if you put three enchantments on an item on three different instances you cant add a fourth one.
